Bizarre Politics Reports:
46,000 apply for 1000 Wal-Mart Jobs
A total of 46,000 applied for just 750 Wal-Mart Jobs only paying near minimum wages.
Of this number 25,000 applied at a new Wal-Mart over the Chicago city border and another 15,000 applied at another store near Chicago for a total of about 700 jobs
In Cleveland, 6,000 applied for 350 jobs at a new Wal-Mart build in the graveyard of the steel industry called Steelyard Commons. The steel mills are gone where thousands once made a good middle class living. Now there are even widows who do not have any medical insurance and many have no pensions with many of their husbands losing their jobs before reaching retirement age.
Another sad story is really about you as a taxpayer. The Federal Government is now paying the pensions that were wiped out when some of the steel mills went bankrupt. Taxpayers are now paying these pensions including those who work at Wal-Mart. The Federal Pension Insurance plan is going broke.
Only about 50 percent of the Wal-Mart workers are full-time. It takes six months for a full-time worker to qualify for benefits and a year for part-time workers. Match this with about a 50 percent turn over per year. Reportedly, Managers also tell workers how to get government and private help to supplement their pay.
About two months ago, Wal-Mart reported that their customers were running out of money to spend before the end of the month and were adjusting their inventory to fit the situation.
This is an indication, that Free Trade is truly a race to the bottom with the working poor now finding it difficult to even afford the cheaper imported goods at Wal-Mart. In the process shoppers are still shopping their way out of their jobs in a no win situation.
An Associated Editor at the Cleveland Plain Dealer says the workers should be content with taking these jobs. They should have prepared better for the competive race. However, it no longer matters how much education or high tech skills you get if everyone in the world has to compete for the same jobs. Also, workers pay their way out of their jobs supporting Research and Development when the production phase goes outside the USA. More than a million workers have lost their jobs in the computer industry. Some computer companies rate their employees before they turn 40 so that they can avoid any conflict with the age regulations. One third of all workers over 55 who lost their jobs never found another one. A note in a church bulletin read - Success is not going bankrupt before reaching Social Security age.
