Free Trade knocks on your front door

October 23rd 2009 03:01
Bizarre Politics Reports: We previously wrote about the mayor of our city surrendering to Free Trade. Here is a new story that should hit home.
We previously told you how our impoverished city surrendered to Free Trade. But, nothing seems to stop our city leaders from surrending more to Free Trade

Our impoverished city surrenders to Free Trade again

We also told you about the new Walmart store being built in the graveyard of the steel industry. Our Mayor Jackson celebrated the event where thousands of steelworkers once made a middle class income and supported a vast tax base. Now many of the older retired steel workers have their pensions paid by the federal government directly which means other taxpayers are paying their pensions. Some of these taxpayers work at places like the new Walmart built in the steel industry graveyard but many of these workers also need government assistance in order to survive on the pay they received at Walmart.

We also told you about foreign auto assemblers being paid more than a billions dollars to build their new assembly plants in the U.S.

Now here is the latest insult to the American Workers. The City of Cleveland purchased 20 Honda Civic hybrids through a state program in effort to save money and promote a cleaner environment. Honda does have an assembly plant in Ohio with the parts coming from the cheapest labor markets of the world that steal thousands of jobs from America . This is bad enough , but the new Hondas purchased are directly imported from Japan.

More than 400,000 U.S auto workers in the United States lost their jobs in the past two decades. Our City once had thousands of workers in auto related jobs. Now the private sector workers take another hit as their political leaders betray them again. Instead of talking about ways to save what's left of our local value added economy, we are going to vote for gambling casinos instead.

Mayor Jackson of Cleveland is running for re-election and most likely will win inspite of his betraying workers. The shipping containers full of imports continue to roll by at rail road crossings throughout the city. Nothing is said about the overhead of long haul shipping and its affects on the environment. Nothing is said about the contradictions with energy efficient Honda coming all the way from Japan via energy consuming and polluting long haul shipping. It seems everyone is overwhelmed as Free Trade has smashed through their own front door too.

Workers again have been betrayed by those who were supposed to save the day. And the new "green" cars from Japan are really not that green.
