free trade war is personal -

A dark pattern behind free trade is becoming a standard practice. It is about the only standard left.

Back in the late 1980s, as a trouble shooter supplyer in the computer industry for years, I was called on to resolve many manufacturing problems. The problems became intense when the components were no longer made in the USA. Foreign manufacturing did not have the same protocols. Standards were difficult to control if there were any to control.

In one situation, I had to hunt down a decent power supply for micro industrial computers. My client could not find any that passed their testing. This manufacturer would first test components in house and then send them out into the field for a six month test. After this they were brought back and went through destructive testing to make sure the particular compenent could hold up for the long term.

I called many people to see what was available at a reasonable cost. I found one that seemed to fit all their needs and they purchased a few and then later alot.

However, in the ordering cycle, I found there were no standards. The maker would change parts inside and not give the item a new product number or even put an R after the product number which stands for a revision.

By the time by client tested the components in the field for six months, the newer products were not even the same thing with many of the inner components were changed. Needless to say, I took a big hit and the client did not know what to do. In this case the product came from Japan. This was happening while Toyota automobiles had the reputation of the best in quality manufacturing and I wondered how this could be for years.

My client the industrial computer manufacturer went out of busines after being in business for many years.

This same scenario repeated itself over and over again until there was no way of supplying components for their or many others computer needs.

Recently, the Associated Press released a story about Japan taking a big hit in trying to compete with China. Their flagship company, Toyota, has recalled more than 10 million vehicles in an embarassing safety crisis.

Japan was one of the first nation that gave itself to the free trade era. This followed the Marshall Plan where American helped restore their economy after the second world war. Now the once-confident Japan, 2010 represent a giant decline from being an economic giant to what experts see as it likely destiny of becoming a second-tier power. For years they also led in the computer fields but now parts are coming from everywhere.

About 77 percent of Japan's jobless are not getting unemployment benefits.
( In the U.S. only about 38 percent of all workers qualify for unemployment insurance.) This is the nature of free trade that moves production from place to place for the sake of cheaper labor. It has made production portable - ready to move again and again for the sake of cheaper labor. Workers in Japan do not get unemployment benefits due in part to the fact there are so many temporary workers who do not qualify. Japan has become a nation with a workforce that is flitting from one temporary job to another. Temporary workers have grown to a third of the entire work force.

Economic problems in Japan is a chief reason for more than 30,000 Japanese committing sucide every year for the past 12 years.

New Japanese leaders are calling for an open door policy for all imports. They say this will make the country a more attractive place to invest. Analysts say it could be a way for economic recovery but also would lead to more job losses, especially in rural areas.

Obviously, this would lead to an island of investment with workers taking the hit. The dislocation of workers would increase and increase. But, this is the nature of the free trade beast where economies are based on making money on money instead of making and growing things. Japan's factories would go the same way as the U.S. factories went.

Free trade is about economies that go around and around and come out somewhere else in the world.

The Japan story represents a standard. It is a standard of what free trade does and every country in the world that thinks they will be better off by letting the free market take hold, here is the pattern of what to expect.

All should have know years ago when I could not find a single component based on real standards. Free trade manipulates production for the sake of money. And the pool of workers who will always work for less is endless.
