Impoverished city surrenders to free trade

Our Mayor tried to pass a no bid deal with a Chinese company for a ten year contract to supply lighting for our whole city.

He finally gave up and has cancelled the Sunpu LED deal after an uproar by many citizens. He and other city leader still have the same mindset that blocks out free trade as the cause of our economic crisis. The same apparently applys to political leaders around the world. It is time for all to discuss how we can really restore our local economies.

It is fair to say that every real manufacturing job creates or supports ten other jobs. And it does not make sense to start anything locally, if the production phase of the project is in some far away place. There are about five levels of
added value from the raw product stage to the retail or end user level.
If any of the added values are somewhere else in the world, it affects
or limits how far a local economy can grow. Several states in our
country have paid out more than a billions of taxpayers' money to
foreign companies to build their assembly plants in their states. One of
the worst case scenarios is in a neighboring state where the foreign
company was paid millions of dollars to build their assembly plant. They
created 5,000 new jobs. In the process, higher paid workers who were
actually producing made in the USA products, lost their jobs. On top of
this, about 20,000 parts manufacturing jobs were lost in the state since
the new foreign owned factory is just an assembly plant with the parts
coming from the cheaper labor markets of the world down to the lowest
levels of wage slave workers in dirty manufacturing facilities.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said it all during a congressional
hearing about Pres. Bush's first stimulus package. He told Congress that
the best way to stimulate the economy is to buy "domestically produced
goods" and the best way to restore a local economy is to buy locally
produced goods that add value from the raw product stage to the final
retail or end user level as much as possible. World trade is not new
but it certainly never was what is called free trade now.

What is called free trade is not about trading products but about making workers the commodity being traded for the sake of cheaper and cheaper labor costs. Not until our city leaders acknowlege this fact will we be able to restore our local economies.
