The Trap by Sir James Goldsmith - forecasted the economic crisis .
The Trap by Sir James Goldsmith forecasted our economic crisis more than ten years ago.
In 1993, one year prior to the passing of the NAFTA and GATT, trade agreement, Sir James Goldsmith wrote The Trap. Sir James was a corporate raider who bought corporations for pennies on the dollar. He was an Anglo- French billionaire fnancier with connections to leading historical financial families.
He found a better calling after a phenomenally sucessful business and financial career. He withdrew from his business ventures in 1990 to devote his time to stop the surge of problems that were threatening our society. He co-founded a new political movement called the L'Autre in Europe and founded the Referendum Party in England.
He did all this after he witnessed the increase of people living in poverty as the urban slums spread in cities across the globe. He was an ardent conservative but in his his advocacies, he helped formed alliances with even the far left who were trying to stop the surge of poverty. Like Peter Maurin of the Catholic Workers, he was not a Communist but welcomed all who wanted to help stop the tide of poverty flowing over the globe. In him you can find out the meaning of the term Populist. In him, you can begin to understand the urgency of Populism in our times before any radical right or left economic desease takes over.
President Roosevelt said this - economic diseases are highl communicable. We see them spreading across the globe in the Bewildered New World seeking something to grasp .
In his book, The Trap, he notes a growing realization that something fundamental has gone wrong in the world and that those in power do not know what should be done with many finding financial gain by avoiding the world sliding into poverty. Goldsmith seeks to understand what went wrong and why. He wonders how is it possible for humanity'g greatest leap forward in material prosperity has allowed an extreme social breakdown during a period of history when the greatest technology was founded.
The West chose to pursue a course of free trade and globalization concentrating on making money on money instead of making things.
Goldsmith pursued answers in his book The Trap to alleviate the global disorientation while world groupings aggravated the fundamental causes.
Goldsmith in essence predicted the economic crisis and dedicated all his time to stopping it , but he died before he could realize any success.
He remains on the front lines through many who are following his lead. Hopefully many will now read The Trap as a way of meeting the challenges in a vicious global economic arena where winners take all.
