No matter how you slice it, It's still baloney - Globalism is the major "ism" of our times and free trade is its tool
Tom Friedman is a Globalist who promotes unfair trade. Capitalism is supposed to make it easy for all to be good. Today with it being in a survival of the fittest mode, it is just the opposite. The USA now has over 2 million in prison with this being one of the biggest businesses in the world now.
Prior to so called free trade and the new world economy, the U.S.A. at least put on a face of fair trade. Much of what other countries did would have been considered illegal in this country. Now we are weak instruments for the good in any of the process because we are now part of it.
Now that the USA has moved its production outside its borders, it is an anything goes situaion on how the products are made down to wage slave labor with the environmental and safety issues ignored. Monopolies outside the USA are ignored with places like China using even their government to totally control businesses. Also with NAFTA, GATT, the WTO and Fast Track, governments now act as economic and power brokers in the flow of wealth. Large trans national corporate leaders suggest that the USA has to get rid of some of its sovereignty issues. We have secret tribunals making decisions for all via NAFTA and the WTO. Much of this is accomplished outside of any real democratic process and our juidicial system. For example, Canada was suing California for millions if not billions of dollars for stopping the use of a gas additive that was poisoning the environment. NAFTA was supposed to rule on this in a secret session.
It is a real "ism" that came in the backdoor
The new world economy and Globalism is now the new - ism - that is above all the rest. It no longer matters if you are a socialist, communist or captialist. Deals go down no matter with the USA experiencing the most massive dislocation of workers in U.S. history.
In the 1990s the stock market thrived on firing workers rather than hiring them. Today, there are companies with good stock values that virtually have no employees left in the USA.
Meanwhile, the production unions now make up only about 25 percent of all workers with the public workers and retail workers now the largest part. The production workers unions have been virtually gone for years but still are blamed for our economic mess. Soon public workers will be outsourced too. For example, 18 states use workers in Indian to process welfare clients in the USA.
