Greenspan and Clinton together in the land of is - Y2k Crisis saves them
President Clinton said it all depends on what your definition of "is" is. He said this in defense of his actions during his impeachment hearings. His definition was relative to other happenings during his term in office. He proclaimed a statistical prosperity while millions were losing their jobs and while many small and big businesses went out of business.
In 1998, I put out a list titled - If this is a good economy, I would hate to see a bad one. It is on the Federal Trade Commission site pertaining to the question about maintaining the Made in USA label
I revised the list in 2003 at Tapart News and Art that Talks and not much had changed. We tried to dig deeper into the unemployment rate methods again since they certainly do not match up with the streets. We could revise the list again in 2008, but not much has changed. The hunger, bankruptcies, homeless, underclass, the uninsured etc still remain about the same. The same negatives have applied for many years now without any relief. President Clinton and President Bush are like one when it comes to Globalization, Free Trade and their economic reporting. Alan Greenspan was there throughout these years where it all depended on what your definition of "is" is in economics too. Greenspan sold his image and brand of economics while the American Dream was burning.
By 1998, most major corporate headquarter offices had closed down in our city. The top employers in our county like many others in the USA were government related employers. The private sector was crushed. The AFL-CIO was primarily a public sector union with most of the private sector production workers gone. The steel mills were gone. 700,000 workers related to the steel industry had lost their jobs. More than 400,000 auto workers did too. More than a million workers in the computer industry were gone too. The Y2k crisis came because of this.
Most computer systems were operating on automatic for years since so many computer workers lost their jobs. Large mainframe computer software systems were patched over and over again. Some were like an inner tube with hundreds of patches. Computer housekeeping was something in the past.
As noted in our former post - Greenspan-for-whom-the-bell-tolls , hundreds of computer manufacturers were gone. Thousands of system houses were too. Much of the software support was too. Jobs were being outsourced to Asia. Many Globalists like Thomas Friedman in his book The World is Flat writes the Asia was there to save us. Globalization and Free Trade was working. It was just the opposite. The major cause for the Y2k crisis was due to the thousands of computer jobs in the USA being lost due to foreign competition. Globalization and Free Trade were the cause of the Y2k crisis.
In our city and in my business, I experienced the lost of hundreds of customers and channels of supply. The high tech companies that once were the highlight of our region were gone including the Cat Scan manufacturer that I was helped start. Most of the local computer media manufacturers were closed too. The rubber industry that thrived for many years in Akron, was dead. Hundreds of major manufacturers in our region had closed their doors. A thousand system houses and computer dealers who started businesses in the PC revolution closed down. ( I have a printout of the businesses in just a tri-state area.)
The Y2k crisis had to be solved prior to the year 2000. The help came like a light bulb giving its last burst of light. As Greenspan says in his book, billions of dollars were spent to fix the problems. Both government and private business spent large amount of dollars quickly. Many businesses went out on the limb this way to save their business. Many really did not have the money to spend but they did. In the end, it ruined some business and they had to quit operations. The Wall Street Journal had an article about companies afraid of hiring back old workers for fear they would do more harm than good because these workers were fired. Others jumped to the micro computers to fill the void. The Dot Coms start to look very good under all these conditions. There was talk about the internet being one big data farm for companies to store their data in new ways. However, they found just a few years later how dangerous this method was with all the hacking possible on the internet.
The heavy financial response to the the Y2k caused an artificial stimulus for the economy and made it look like something it was not. This did not stop President Clinton and Alan Greenspan from using this to cover the terrible economic storm that stole the American Dream from millions of workers across the USA. Their statistical prosperity was a sham. The Dot Coms crashed after the Y2k crisis was over. President Bush followed with his pre-emptive wars that hid this on-going economic storm. One of Senator Voinovich's first speeches on the Senate floor was about Clinton's balancing the budget and his surplus being a sham that was based t on the Social Security Trust Fund. President Clinton did admit the used the Social Security Trust Fund to support his wars in the Balkans. It is also bizarre that no one talks about how President Clinton consistently bombed Iraq when he was in office. However, this is the way things worked in the land of "is" where everything depended on what your defintion of "is" is.
Greenspan's book should be titled The Age of Greed in the land of "is".
Greenspan and Clinton joined hands at the altar of greed.
