Mexican bishops say NAFTA leading to cultural death - another NAFTA disaster is not reported in major media channels in the USA
Mexico's bishops plead against NAFTA
( Statement signed by Auxiliary Bishop Gustovo Rodriguez Vega of Monterrey, president of the bishops' social action commission and the followin bishops - Archbishop Rafael Romo Munoz of Tijuana, Bishops Luis Flores Calzada of Valle de Chalco; Miguel Alba Diaz of La Paz; Abelardo Alvarado Alcantara, auxiliary of Mexico City; Carlos Garfias Merlos of Netzahualcoyot; Rafael Martinez Sainz, auxillary of Guadalajara; Domingo Dias Marinez of Tuxpan; and Felipe Arizmendi Esquivel of San Cristobalde Las Casa. )
The bishops say the abolition of agricultural tariffs under NAFTA, is putting poor Mexican farmers out of business and threatening the destruction of entire rural communities. Farmers and their families are forced to migrate to the cities or cross the border into the United States leaving their homeland for the sake of economic survival.
" No system is untouchable when it generates death," the bishops state
They warned that poor farmers are tempted to grow crops for illegal drugs which in turn cause a surge in violent crime. ( Other farmers in South American do it for the sake of survival )
Mexico may not be able to feed itself if it succumbs to producing biofuels from grain.
" In the present circumstances they ( the farmers ) will never be able to compete with the enormous subsidies the U.S. and Canada give their (*farmers ) " (* who for the most part are now vast trans-national agriculture corporations who know how to get Federal subsidies in large amounts. )
" We cannot limit the practice of our faith to the celebration of ritual and ethereal preaching," the bishops said. " It is clear the words of Jesus do not allow us to remain in the comfort of selfishness and passivity but rather exhort us to do all we can for the poor"
Bizarre Politics has posted several articles about the terrible conditions and contradictions of Free Trade - see other posts. Bishops in the USA should take heed and search out the cause and effects behind illegal immigration. Their starting point is far from the core of the problem. It is not something news and Free Trade is the cause. It should also be noted this is all happening after the U.S. has moved more the 4,000 factories to Mexico. President Bush says the Mexican workers come to the USA to take jobs Americans will not do but neglects to tell us that there are many jobs in Mexico that Mexican workers will not do . Now many of these jobs are moving to China where workers will work for pennies a day. As a result the U.S. has created a vast working poor class in the USA and an underclass in Mexico with all options running out . ( See Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke says buy USA post )
