County Judge suggests people arm themselves
Ashtabula County Judge Alfred Mackey in Ohio , USA , says he is not advocating a Wild West mentality, but suggests the local rural population should consider having a gun on hand to protect themselves. Cutbacks in deputy sheriffs, leaves only one cruiser to patrol the entire county.
John Ginnard, a gun owner and owner of e-comm Cafe says the the bad guys should think twice about messing with us. He says he can handle it.
The global economic arena has hit hard. The county has suffered from decades of job loss. The unemployment rate is higher than most other counties in the state. Revenue has dropped from about $23 million to a projected $17.8 million.
The Bewildered New World has reached the heartland of America.
When Sheriff Bill Johnson came into office in 1993, he had a staff of 112. Last year, he was down to 77 and this year it is down to 49. Two deputies per shift in one cruiser are responsible for patrolling the county's 27 townships. The sheriff also staffs the County Jail, where the lack of manpower means more than 700 people who have been sentenced are out in the community waiting to serve their time.
Sheriff's deputies could not get to a burglary at a community center for almost two hours because they were busy with handling another crime.
Judge Mackey was driven to speak out about the situation. Some people thought it was about time for someone to tell it like it is.
Connie Shultz, a top Cleveland Plain Dealer columnist and wife of Senator Sherod Brown wrote a piece about it too. The title of the article is - Defending Fort Ashtabula. She says the problems are not only local but are spread across the USA. She writes that Judge Mackey says, "There are a lot of hard-working people here and these are tough times, - We used to bend metal up here and mold plastic for automobiles. Our port used to be busy too. - ."
"Now the jobs are going or gone. If you lose your job, it's hard to find a new one. We're one of the poorest counties in the state. --- I thought people needed to know the gravity of the situation."
Charles Riley, a Munroe Township trustee, told reporter Livingston that people should use shotguns not handguns, and that way we don't have to send the criminalsto court or jail, because they will be dead.
This certainly sounds like the it's back to the future to the wild west frontier and still only a few mention the NAFTA, GATT, CAFTA and other free trade agreements as the cause. We have been doing it for more than ten years. Senator Sherod Brown talks a lot about it but never seems to want to go too deep into the causes. Free Trade has betrayed the American Dream for all in the world. A working poor class replaced the middle class and now even they are losing their jobs. It is an endless race to the bottom. We should be directly talking about this instead of arming ourselves.
President Bush and President Obama bailed out the money changers who were responsible for the Free Trade debacle and then put them back in charge of it. For many there is no way out while the deflation of the value of workers continue.
The people can ponder all this while waiting at a railroad stop watching all the COSCO shipping containers rolling by full of imports with many. COSCO is the giant Chinese shipping company owned in part by the Chinese Liberation Army. No one talks about this story.
Farther south in the next county is impoverished Youngstown Ohio where just below that city is route 224 full of shopping centers for miles. Some of the shopping centers are closed now but still many others are there for miles from Akron Ohio to Pittsburgh Pa - selling all the imported products as workers who once had good jobs keep shopping their way out of even their working poor jobs. The money spent at these stores quickly go to the places where the products are made in far away places around the world where underclass workers struggle to meet their daily needs.
Say the words - It's not that hard
Today, Kevin O'Brien, a top journalist for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, followed up on the story in his weekly column on the editorial page. Kevin is a Conservative Crusader and God knows we need someone like him but he just can not mouth some real words about the real causes behind our economic crisis. He tells us that the Ashtabula County story is a wake up call. He says, "You're on your own" is a hard message for Americans, who have been so blessed with prosperity for so long. If we're wise, we'll embrace it now because we would rather be adults with a government rather than children of a government.
This is a good message but it leaves too much out. The elder President Bush announced the engagement of the money changers and big government. President Clinton followed and consummated the engagement with the passing of NAFTA, GATT and the WTO free trade agreements. President Bush, the son, followed and did the same hiding the greatest scam of the century behind his pre-emptive wars putting on a shock and awe show. Now President Obama comes and marries big government with big money in a new kind of Socialist Capitilist merger. The conservatives played the biggest role in all of this while goverment acted as a power broker and dealer in pushing Free Trade and Globalization.
It is time for people like Kevin O'Brien to use his words. It is not hard. Free Trade and Globalization are the causes of our economic crisis. When I hear Kevin O'Brien uses the words NAFTA, GATT and the WTO as representing something very bad, then I will have hope things will change.
