Today during our economic crisis, far too many journalists who still have jobs, do not realize they are now speaking down to the masses not understanding the cause and effect of Globalization and Free Trade. It is time for them to jump in the water and swim with the lost economic souls to truly underdstand their problems
President Bush hid our economic problems behind his "shock and awe" wars. President Clinton did the same things with his Balkan wars and the passing of the unfair NAFTA and GATT trade agreements with a Democrat Congress in control.
Now President Obama comes and merges big government with big money while ignoring those who lost everything due to Globalization and Free Trade. He now uses the health care issue to hide the real causes behind the economic crisis - Free Trade and Globalization
In 1999, Katherine Newman, author of Falling from Grace, in essence predicted the fall of our economy. Her book is still a must read and from what I understand she has recently written another book on the subject.
Newman talks about "Downward mobility". She says it is really a broken convenant. Workers have been betrayed by those in power and find their careers, quality of life, financial security, peace of mind - falling out of reach. They have fallen from grace that once represented a proud and honest way of life.
Today the people are stunned. They are not sure what cultural rules are left to reverse the race to the bottom - or even how to instruct their children to survive.
Today, surprisely, a Liberal Democrat President has merged big government with big money. He led the way in bailing out the financial communities and Wall Street while jumping over those who lost everything . At the same time, he uses the very same forces that caused the problems to supposedly fix the problems. Obama now focuses on the health care issues ignoring the fact that the power to pay for health care and other needs of society have been chopped off in a global economic arena where human beings as workers are the real commodities being traded on a global block. Workers are put on a world trading block to compete with one another for the same jobs. And there is no job that can not be traded this way unless it is protected in some way by big government or big money.
Back in 1999, Newman demonstrated how these people contended with financial lost when finding they were selected to be displaced outside the middle class. The author captured the despair of people who once felt they were in control of their lives and who suddenly face an unpredictable future in the "Bewildered New World" that Manuel Castells wrote about more than ten years ago. And now today, the "Bewildered New World" is seeping into all parts of our lives.
Newman tells about a new communion of workers suffering these losses together and perhaps those who are now standing up in the town hall meetings and in effect are asking who said we had to compete in a global economic arena like this. How can health care issues be addressed if the cause and effect are not recognized.
