Workers say Screw that Bulb

Bizarre Politics Reports:
Workers get Energy Savings Pink Slips
We were quoted in newspaper story about the Dark Side of Energy Saving Light Bulbs The story is also at Dark Side News Story Our response was later published - see A darker story behind the Dark Side of Energy Saving Light Bulbs
A few days later the IUE CWA Electrical Workers put in a full size ad in the newspaper titled Green Technology shouldn't mean a Pink Slip for American Workers since 90 percent of the energy saving light bulbs are Made in China - 8000 miles away - consuming loads of energy with the emission of greengases getting to the USA.
Plus, many workers lose their jobs in the process.

There is another side to the problem - the need for extra protective packaging for the trip to the USA. The manufacturing of all the packaging we use today, impacts the environment more than some of the products inside.
As a young man, I worked in our family food store and I had to debate with many of the shoppers to take a new paper shopping bag. They re-used them over and over again. They also had their own cloth shopping bags. They also refrained from products that required alot of packaging assuming they had to pay more for the item that way. They looked for bulk foods etc. instead. If they were alive today, and were taken to the door of a large super market, they would be frozen in place, wondering what happen to peoples' common sense. All should wonder how the overhead of long haul shipping and all the packing can compete with local production. Obviously, it comes down to the cost of labor. Free Trade and Globalization not only assaults the environment radically but also affects jobs.

Or, you can go buy these bulbs at Wal-Mart where 40,000 people applied for 750 jobs for near minimum wages in Cleveland and at two stores just outside Chicago. This is the sign of our times. An Associate Editor at the Cleveland Plain Dealer wrote, people should be happy to take these jobs and not complain.
In Cleveland the Wal-Mart store is build in the graveyard of the steel industry that once employed thousands at middle class wages. Once upon time, 40,000 Steel - workers just in Ohio alone, enjoyed middle class wages. They were able to get married, have children, buy a home and help send their children to college. Now that is all gone and Wal-Mart hawks an energy saving bulb with President Clinton pushing this and similar programs with Wal-Mart.
