It is sad to see letters to the editor about the elderly wanting something for nothing (Nov. 9). This is not the time to be divided by age.
More than 10 years ago, The Plain Dealer reported that one-third of those 55 or over who lost their jobs never found another one. All who lost their jobs due to free trade were promised help. None came.
Some found jobs that paid very little, and they were forced to take their Social Security payments at age 62. At the same time, many lost part of their Social Security check if they made more than about $12,000 a year.
Some of us fought for U.S.-made products to the very end. We fought for the younger generation, not ours. Our time was over. We had hoped consumers would finally stop shopping their way out of their jobs. Unfortunately, they did not.
The real question of our times is this: Who said we had to compete like this in a global economic arena? It certainly did not evolve in any natural economic fashion.

This supposedly temporary program never ended and evolved into what is called free trade. Ray had many letters published in the Cleveland Plain Dealer relating to this during the 1990s and a mobile user friendly summary of most of these articles can be found at ( Letters Archive- Plain Dealer ) It shows that free trade did not evolve in any natural economic fashion but was driven by powerful forces inside government merging with investment communities outside the will of the people.
